Hey Walnuts,

With the current situation in Texas, and I remember you you live there, by choice no less; how are you doing?
yeah i have been watching news reports on how a lot of people there have been without power for 4 days
and are sleeping in their cars to stay warm
they have no electricity or water.

so how are you doing Walnuts?
What are you talking about?

Walnuts intellect is unmatched! Surely he has his house wired to an emergency generator and gasoline on hand...

He went to Mexico with Ted Cruz.
Appreciate the concern. I've been extremely lucky so far. Unfortunately, I'm more the exception than the rule. I have yet to lose electricity and still have a trickle of water coming in.

I prepare for hurricanes, not this shit. So I have plenty of bottled water, toilet paper, batteries, etc.. Freezer fully stocked and the pantry is always good for a few weeks if it came down to it. I have a small rechargeable power unit good enough to power a modem, laptop, and charge phones for a couple of days at a time. I have a half a cord of pecan, oak, and mesquite for the grill. I have a camp stove with a few bottles of propane. I had a case of Sterno, but I've already passed those out. But I have no means to control the temp if the heat goes out.

The stores were ransacked at the first prediction of snow. If you have water, you are being told to boil it -- even though many do not have the means to do so. There are "warming stations" remotely interspersed and if you have a vehicle, the streets might be passable by now to get to them. Of course, all the efforts you have made to COVID quarantining will have gone to shit once you arrive.

Again, I'm very thankfully doing ok. But there is some real suffering going on down here.

It's bad enough dealing with this shit up north where we are used to it.I feel bad for those trying to cope without amenities.
One of the reasons I love oil lamps.

Of course, anyone who knows how can improvise one. There are lots of things that can be used to burn for heat, without causing unbreathable air.

While power is obviously an issue, those who still have phone service can still look up how to generate heat on YouTube.

I know a lot of people affected by this, and it really sucks. Those of us more used to this shit have some sort of plan in place(even if you're just above homeless). Speaking of, the Senior Center right up the street from me has been open as a homeless shelter for the last 2 weeks. I'm quite relieved by that, even though I don't need it myself. We have a fairly large homeless population around here, so it's good to know they aren't going to end up dying because there was a building nearby that could have been used to save their lives, but wasn't.

Stay safe, Walnuts. Let us know if you need anything, even if it's just info on what you can burn to stay warm.
Frozen wind turbines don't deserve all the blame for Texas blackouts

Lore that Green New Deal!
Ah yes, the gamble of not winterizing turbines to save $ hasn't paid off, oops.

Of the 34 gigawatts that went offline, 4 had been supplied by turbines. Fucktardian Vomit Spewer, Tucker Carlson, claims Texas is "totally reliant" on renewable energy sources. Oddly, it was our state's infamous Non-Governor Greg "What?" Abbot that gave rise to that fever dream by going on Faux News with a milder lie. You can see the same guy on numerous other local and national interviews (before and after the Faux News embarrassment) debunking his own shit.

Apparently, that wasn't sufficient to quell the Qtardian Mind Fry.
When 1/4 of the energy from Texas takes a nosedive due to cold weather(Wind/solar) with no backup in place, that's a receipt for disaster. When solar is operating at near 0% or wind at 10%, that's a receipt for disaster. The baseline load should be coal, natural gas, nuclear etc... you supplement with the wind/solar. The problem is only about 65% of power comes from coal, gas, and/or nuclear. That needs to be boosted to 100% and green crap needs to be a bonus.
or you prepare and weatherize, and connect to the other surrounding states....but, that's just too simple...

because I am sure, that you, as I, was "surprised" that solar was not operating at optimal in the storm, and that big blades that may collect uneven amounts of ice or frost and don't spin in balance came as a surprise as well, and that natural gas and the stuff it travels in froze as it came up, or that joints in pipes etc..... add nauseum

when you don't prepare it don't matter who you blame...you will be doing it in the dark
Weatherizing is very costly, which is why they opted out and placed there bets on, "ah, it will never get cold in Texas!" ..oops
You think so?

I wonder what the cost of the last two freezes were in...lost taxes, lost business, cost of infrastructure, lives, etc...
If only there was some kind of warning, they could have been much better prepared.

I guess you need even more of your sources to back out.

It was a crazy week. We were without power for 36 hours and without water for 4 days. We had firewood, and supplies set aside as well, but it is nice not to be camping inside anymore. During the coldest Feb. in 122 years. Fun times.
Its been t-shirt weather for the last few days, though, hasn't it, Boo Boo?
Perfect Spring weeather. :)
looking forward to being able to visit Austin again and wake up on 6th...repeatedly

*bloody mary and green chile fries at Casino El Camino
You did get to make it through Lockhart last time, didn't you?
Yes, yes I did. I think I still have about 2 or 3 pounds to lose that I found there.
