Poll: Should Trump remain gagged on Twitter?

Yes (31%)

No (31%)

Won’t make a difference either way (38%)

Poll has ended (it ran for 7 days). 16 total votes.

Argue, preferably with more personal attacks and insults to get this promptly moved to the ?
Can someone refresh my memory of what Trump has said to endanger people? If I remember correctly, his speech prior to January 6th went something like "I want you to kill all the Democrats. We must crush our enemies, see them driven before us and hear the lamentations of their women. I want their heads!"

Curiously enough, NPR interpreted it as "We fight like hell. And if you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore." https://www.npr.org/2021/02/10/966396848/

I heard just as bad or worse from people in power during the Floyd protests and riots, which I supported (the protests, not the riots). I never supported Trump, and yet I can admit this.
I voted "it won't make any difference" in the sense that whether Trump goes on Twitter or not, people cannot have their minds changed anymore .

Alternatively, without the daily reminders of what he's all about, I'm afraid moderates may be more likely to vote for Trump again if he remains gagged on twitter (so my back up vote is 'no').

But yeah, the riot/insurrection/peaceful protests at the capitol on Jan 6 ultimately would not have happened without Trump and his word. I think at a 10,000 ft level any rational person can agree with that.
"Can someone refresh my memory of what Trump has said to endanger people?
I'll pick just one clear example.

...

Trump knew many people attending his Jan 6 rally had weapons...
...and that that they headed to the Capitol...
...and that he had already been briefed multiple times about the online chatter suggesting violence was planned...

...by 1pm, there were breaches in barriers and confrontations with police.

...by 1:45 pm, an officer on the scene is calling it a riot.

...by 2pm, rioters begin forcing their way into the building where lawmakers -- including Mike Pence -- are.

...by 2:20pm, rioters are in the building, congress members are being evacuated, windows have ben smashed all over the place, officer Eugene Goodman is trying to divert a mob away from where Congress is being evacuated.

There is violence all over the place at this point. Officers being attacked with chemical substances, beaten with flags, etc etc.

At this point, the Vice President and hundreds of members of Congress are in obvious danger.

Luckily at 2:24pm Trump tweets, "We can disagree about this sort of thing without violence. You must leave the Capitol grounds now. If something happens to my loyal Vice-President of the last four years, there will be hell to pay! Law and order!"
...

Oddly enough, Twitter's algorithm autocorrected this to:
“Mike Pence didn't have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our country and our Constitution."
...

Joking aside, I wonder if we can agree that tweet endangered Mike Pence. If not, we probably have zero common ground on this.
I don't even know anyone irl that follows Twitter. Am I missing something here? Are you guys on Twitter everyday, all day?

I browse through Twitter every day but barely ever tweet. Deleted Facebook a year or two ago and that was nice. Twitter is a cesspool for the most part, but I do find it great for breaking news or other things that happen. It usually hits Twitter first, then Reddit.

Yes, ~50 million americans use twitter all day, every day, and they are intense. My wife is one of them.

The axiom is that every day one thing blows up on twitter and you don't want it to be about you. In my profession, I've seen shit explode and people apologize---get cancelled---get fired (somewhere on that continuum). I usually find out a day later after everything had settled down, but while it's happening it's a shit storm. That fraction of america that uses this makes it their life.
What did trump ever do to endanger Americans? Fucking really?
I can think of one person who seemed to be on Twitter all day, every day in real life.

I don't have a Twitter account.

@realdonaldtrump had 88.9 million followers.

For those not on Twitter,
President Trump posted the same thing about Pence on Facebook. I'm not sure what time, but I figure it was probably simultaneously with the Tweet via one of those apps that posts to multiple social media accounts automatically. The Facebook post was shared 49K times.

Donald Trump's Facebook page currently has 34 million followers, doubtless with heavy overlap with his Twitter followers.

Meh, a lot of those are bots.
Sure, some were bots.

More pertinent to the question of endangering Mike Pence's life, though:

Many were not. And some of the non-bots were in position to harm Mike Pence.
I don't follow Twitter or Facebook(another platform with lots of bots) but what danger actually? The dumbies walking into a building and taking selfies? Were they going to *selfie* Mike Pence to death? Huh?

I don't get twitter. I had an account for a bit and just didn't really know what the hell I was doing. From what I gather, unlike facebook, it's more about chatting with celebrities and a contest with who gets the most retweets as opposed to comments (that's being ratioed, isn't it?) I posted some edgy memes but then it got old. I think you have to get into it to make it worthwhile, invest time, something that I don't have much of and would rather spend my leisure time bantering with my TFC buddies or playing TFC.

@illuision, why did you can facebook but still have twitter?

I don't think it matters. Trump is a very polarizing figure. I it will be interesting to see how the midterms turn out. It could be argued that they are a referendum on Biden, a sort of buyers remorse. Another thing is I think Twitter is a microcosm of what's wrong with the country. The idea that you can condense ideas into 150 or 200 (I think they upped it ) words is analogous to the media playing 5 second sound clips. I also say it doesn't matter because it looks like the ADL is going to make Twitter pay hazard pay for a seat on its council and give its blessing for advertisers to unpause advertising. And in case your wondering, the idea that the ADL is doing this is a classic anti-Semitic trope even if its true. So with the ADL on there, even if Trump gets back on chances are the ADL will find some way to boot him or engage in more humiliation rituals.

It sort of rings hollow the people who poopoo the "violence" on January 6th, as chances are they support the "mostly peaceful protests" that burned down white middle America. The only person who was killed was a protestor, Ashlii Babbitt. There was plenty of violence and destruction on Trump's inauguration day and if I recall correctly most of if not all those arrested in DC had their charges drop. "Whataboutism." Violence for me but not for thee. That being said, it will certainly be a stain on Trump if he runs again despite the fact of lots of funny business during the 2020 election and lots of weird stuff pertaining to Jan. 6th like unindicted coconspirators and who can forget the footage of police opening the doors for the protestors. Democrats are masters of doing illegal things and getting away with them. The thing is though Trump was subverted left and right. Russia collusion is now literally a debunked conspiracy theory, and not only that, arguably it was Hillary accusing Trump of what she herself was doing, colluding with foreign agents for dirt on Trump.
I still think the "Pence didn't have the courage" remark is tenuous at best as reasoning to ban him, especially given everything BABL said in his last paragraph.

Twitter is great for receipts when the media lets the truth out on accident, then retracts it.
Usually they lie, lie, lie and then quietly issue a retraction later on. Project veritas has a longgggg list of proof over the years. From Washington Post to Washington Compost.
Yeah, well, I said it a long time ago:

"The US has gone from the world's Melting Pot, to the world's Chamber Pot."

And you can quote me on that.

Authoritarians and dictators are elected in. Mussolini, Hitler, Putin, etc.

It's heart breaking to see the country so invested in "winning," rather than preserving democracy.

A system where one half of the two party system has
* State electors can override the votes of the people
* 300 election deniers that are 2022-midterm candidates to be elected
* An unwillingness to accept the outcome of elections unless they are victors,

regardless of party affiliation, will bring only challenges for future generations.

The country will never be the same, and the enablers think of themselves as patriots.
Cascadia may be closer to reality than previously thought.
Wokeghent thinks we're a democracy. Earth to idiot, we have this thing called an electoral college.

Perhaps. Though what's important for me is to recognize, state, and appreciate that regardless of the results, and the inevitable direction of the Senate, the elections are legitimate and fair.

If the Republicans take more seats of the Senate, then kudos to them for pulling in the votes.

If the Democrats take more seats of the Senate, then kudos to them for pulling in the votes.

Today's system is as fair and equitable as the country can make it be.
I think it's silly that they declare a winner before all votes are counted. I get the projections and probabilities, but it just always appears premature.

In one case the news, don't remember which outlet or race (was on Twitter) declared a winner with only 2% of the precincts reporting.

2%. Now, was that the most populous of the precincts? Or does that district trend a certain way and the 2% followed the trend?

It's the part of election reporting that I've always despised...
Agreed. All for the clicks/views I think.

NYT has a fantastic website tracking the elections - and much more quiet than the noise of the tv :)

aaaaaaaaactually it's a constitutional and federal republic

but I get where you're going with that
You're 100% correct, a constitutional federal republic. I was just pointing out the always forgotten electoral college, which pretty much disqualifies us from being a *democracy*. Not sure why it's so hard for people to understand, must be that scary constitution word. Yeah, that's it. (psssst.. sarcasm)

Im not young enough to have a Twitter so I dont care.

Sort of dont care about any of this Trump BS.

Can we just let Trump retire from politics and get back being a self made billionaire?
We can't miss him if he won't go away.

Come to think of it, most of us won't miss him anyway.... but that's standing across the room from the point.
