I turned 13 in 1980.... so I got to "come of age" in that decade. The pool hall/arcade I practically lived at was a smoke-filled dive where underage people were given alcohol on the weekends just to see how silly we would get... and the owner's son and I pulled a LOT of pranks on random people both in the establishment, and outside of it. But what memories.... it was a glorious time to be a teenager. But your sensibilities wouldn't let you have the kind of fun that we had. We grew up in different times. I still can't believe that we got away with some of the shit we got away with. Imagine, putting $.50 into a soda machine, pressing the button for a soda......... ....... and a beer dropped out. Yeah. We did that. We put a few beers in the soda machine in random places, just to watch what would happen when someone got lucky and found one. We increased soda sales 10 fold every time we did it. People thought the machine was stocked with them. Nope.... just one here and there. Of course, we denied everything. Cameras weren't everywhere back then.... so there was no proof who did it. One time we DID get busted and in trouble..... with "Pops", not "the law" (though it could have gone that way, if it wasn't the 80s...) Jr. and I were doing Civil War re-enactments, and had black powder guns. So, we had access to black powder in bulk. One Friday night, Jr. and I poured a small pile of black powder into all of the ashtrays around the place. Back then, smoking was popular, and allowed everywhere. So we just waited for the inevitable.... someone would place a lit cigarette in an ashtray, and go take their turn on a pool table. Well, the cigarette would end up lighting the small pile of black powder... which wasn't compressed, so no "BANG!"... just a little "whoosh", followed by a small mushroom cloud.... followed by a loud "WHAT THE FUCK?!" THAT got Pop's attention after the 3rd time it happened. Needless to say, he KNEW who did it.... and man, did we get read the riot act. We were made to apologize to everyone, and clean the stuff up. I'm honestly surprised he didn't kick us out that night. |

They missed the years when they could just be idiots without potentially going viral for it. |
