Bummed I couldn't find it on that front page you posted though, or maybe it wasn't in the obvious spot. |
maniacalclownSuper Regular Headshot God P: 03/18/2021 18:40 | I donated my stimulus to the "New PC for Prat Fund" so that I can maybe play a game that isn't 20+ years old (and still runs like shit on this old potato). |
Ignorant_FloristDaycare Manager Pipebomb Monkey P: 03/18/2021 20:27 | $1400(assuming that's what you got) will buy a really nice PC these days. But, if I may offer a suggestion... Look for a mid-range PC on sale for about $1000, and buy at least one external multi-terabyte drive. I managed to find one on sale at Microcenter a few months back.... 8TB for... less than $150, IIRC. I probably posted about it in the General section. Helluva deal, and it's going to take a while to fill that bad boy. As it stands, the computer I bought a few years ago runs every modern game I have thrown at it so far, very well. I'm not bragging, but trying to help out someone else who sounds like isn't in the best position to afford "high end" systems. I'm in the same boat. Hell, my last PC was 10 years old, on it's last leg, and I was barely able to keep it going until I could afford to replace it. |

Major Major Major Major's father was a farmer who got more gubment money for the more alfalfa he did not grow. @Iggy. I'm amazed at what bang for your buck you can get these days on computers. Computers in Israel are heavily marked up. My computer cost about an extra $600 than it would if I got it in the US. It's a Lenovo legion and last I checked you could get with a stimulus check and have some beer money left over, if you're in the states that is. The thing about all these stimulus checks is it's going to further dilute the dollar. I've been in Israel for eight years now. The dollar has tend to have been worth 3.5-3.8 shekels and is now worth 3.3 shekels. Given that the federal government has been fiscally sodomizing middle America bent over a dumpster in a seedy a back alley for decades now, I don't think right wingers would be resting on their laurels taking these checks. |

(resists urge to make a joke about Jews and big markups) ;) ANYHOW.... If you also take into consideration the amount of money the US hands to foreign countries(*ahem* including Israel), but you're going to say that giving struggling Americans a drop is going to devalue the dollar... you really need to rethink yourself. That's like saying paying a living wage to your front line workers is going to make McDonalds raise their prices, but the multi-million dollar bonus' the execs get doesn't affect pricing. Putting that aside, and back on the computer part of the conversation... Yes, the power in these machines is way beyond what we thought we'd ever have back in the early days. Consider that computers once took up a large room, and had less power than a cheap cell phone has these days. Just 70 years ago, televisions were black and white, now we've got 4K flatscreens that can display more colours than the human eye can detect. The first time I ever used a computer in school.... have you ever heard of punchcards? |
gg#4Super Regular Killer Scout P: 03/19/2021 11:18 | Iggynomics class in session. How wouldn't raising the cost to produce goods increase prices? All of a sudden these greedy execs and the shareholders they cater to will say, you know what, lets take this one on the chin homies. |
Mr. WalnutsDaycare Manager Pipey FlagCatcher P: 03/19/2021 12:22 | If it were up to execs and shareholders, we'd still have child labor and indentured servitude. Prices won't go up if we DON'T assure people a livable wage? There hasn't been one for decades now. The last meaningful wage hike was in 1990 and sparked the second-longest period of economic expansion in US history. Of course, it wasn't totally responsible for that, but the point is that when people make money, THEY SPEND IT. |
Ignorant_FloristDaycare Manager Pipebomb Monkey P: 03/19/2021 13:22 | What Walnuts said. The economy isn't exactly a simple thing, but boiling it down to a few basics is easy. Wages have stayed the same, or, technically, gone down(when productivity rises and pay does not, your value is decreased), while prices have gone steadily up. You can't blame front line workers for those increases, yet you don't want them to benefit from them. Interesting. |
Prelude to AgonySuper Regular Sniper Harassment Duty P: 03/19/2021 13:32 | I think you're putting words in his mouth by saying 'you don't want them to benefit from them'. That's not what he said. The idea that a business, the employer, a CEO or whatever entity 'in power' over a company is not going to pass off a minimum wage increase onto the consumer, or by eliminating staff, is laughable, IMO. It's a rare bird, the CEO (or equivalent) that will take the hit themselves, to the benefit of their staff or the public. |
Ignorant_FloristDaycare Manager Pipebomb Monkey P: 03/19/2021 14:12 | Well, that's not incorrect, but it is wrong(in a moral sense). Of course they are... but they shouldn't. Nor should it be the excuse used to deny paying people their actual worth. If I post a link to a video about the subject, would you guys watch it? I'm asking ahead of time, as it will likely take a bit to track down. I watch a lot of stuff on YouTube, and I saw that video a couple of weeks ago. In any case, I think it was older, so tracking it down(I at least know what channel posted it) only for you guys to not watch it and/or ignore it altogether wouldn't make much sense. |
Prelude to AgonySuper Regular Sniper Harassment Duty P: 03/19/2021 14:15 | We're not talking morality. The morality of it is a different argument, IMO. There are a number of things that are done that are morally corrupt, but that doesn't seem to change how it's done. I watched your last fucking video, so I'd watch this one. Still, you'll post it and then probably ghost on the rest of the conversation anyway. :) |

That's not what he said; he said that if you are going to argue cost (payment to labor or mgmt.) you can't argue without addressing both. As to the implications of just arguing one side, I will let you find your own conclusion(s). |

Which is fine. But there was a time when companies treated their employees right. Pay was fair, benefits were decent, and people didn't worry too much about how they'd live when they retired. They were rewarded for a lifetime of service. That doesn't exist anymore, since the main focus has shifted to maximize profit no matter who you have to fuck over. |
Ignorant_FloristDaycare Manager Pipebomb Monkey P: 03/19/2021 15:35 | Here you go: https://youtu.be/hL5VOorY9pw I think this video explains the issue very well. It's 14 minutes long, but there's a promo for something at the end, so he speaks on the subject a bit less than the overall length. I recommend this channel, as the guy does a ton of research and puts things into perspective. But I want to hear your thoughts on what he has to say. |
